Everyone claims to have the best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. But unless it’s this one, they don’t. Really.
We always called these “Mom’s Chocolate Chip Cookies,” although I think she came by the recipe somewhere, back in the day. So, while I can’t claim this is a Lifeticity original, I can wholeheartedly say it is THE BEST.
‘Better double the recipe, at least!’
That’s what the back of my recipe card from my mom says. And she was never wrong. What I remember is coming home from school and finding these cooling on the counter. “You may have one,” she’d say. But we never did. Either she allowed us more, or we snuck them when she wasn’t looking.
We went off to college and got smarter
I like to think this is true. But I will say — the summer after freshman year, my mom had taken to her sneaky trick of baking a double batch of these and putting half of them in the freezer. The one out in the garage, not the easy-to-get-to kitchen one.
But we were not deterred. It took us all of a few seconds, putting our heads together to guess what she’d done. Crisis averted. We just ate them out of the freezer. These are that good. Hot, warm, cold, or frozen, they really can’t be beat.
Teaching math with chocolate chips
Years later, when my eldest went off to nursery school a couple mornings a week, I looked for an activity to do with his younger brother, something that could be just ours.
He was a chocolate nut back then. So we started baking these cookies every week.
I’d like to think I taught him multiplication baking these. We always made four rows of three across. So we’d count, and then multiply. He humored me. He just wanted the cookies.
The extent of my mathematical ability
The joke is that math is not, nor has it ever been, my thing. I can count. And I can multiply. Up to 12 cookies. But the student has far surpassed the teacher in this case. Still, a mom can cling to having had some part in his mathematical success.
Happy baking
Math or no math, I have an indelible memory of those little hands of his scooping out balls of dough and working so hard to line them up evenly on the pan. And then we’d count. And we’d stand, looking into the oven, waiting for them to be done.
These really are the Best Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.
