4-Days in Ojai, California: A Spiritual Reset

What is it about a change in scenery that can provide a complete reset? We experienced this just last week on a trip to Ojai. We went to catch the “pink moment” sunsets, the abundance of produce growing in the valley, the artsy and sophisticated community, and the great, California-style fare. After 4-days in Ojai, what we came away with was closer to a spiritual reset.

Ojai feels a bit other-worldly

Ojai is nestled in a valley surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Topatopa Mountains. It’s a place that feels both timeless and slightly enchanted. Just 80 miles north of Los Angeles, it feels a world away. Orange groves scent the air, pink-tinged sunsets bathe the mountains in their famous “pink moment.” The pace slows to just what you hadn’t realized you needed.

Ojai is the kind of place you feel a part of as soon as you arrive. Ojai Street, the walkable downtown, is peppered with galleries, coffee shops, boutiques, and amazing restaurants. Most surprising? Locals will walk into a coffee house, set their wallet and keys on a table and proceed to join a coffee line, never once turning to check on their valuables. This is Ojai.

The setting and spirit of Ojai

The Ojai Valley runs east to west, which is an an unusual orientation in California. But it’s one that gives rise to the area’s famously dramatic sunsets. At dusk, the setting sun illuminates the mountains in hues of rose and lavender, creating the so-called pink moment, a natural phenomenon even the locals don’t seem to tire of. One afternoon we drove up one of the peaks, passing orchard after orchard as we climbed. We sought a good sunset viewing spot. As we came past one orchard, a woman waved us over as she closed an orchard gate behind her.

“This is my grandfather’s orchard,” she said. “It’s a perfect spot to see the pink sunset, if you just walk in a ways,” and she opened the gate to us. “Go on,” she said, “it’s okay. It’s a beautiful view.” And she was right. This is Ojai.

So close to LA and Santa Barbara but a world apart

Ojai’s main street is lined with Spanish Revival-style arcades, coffee houses, outdoor dining and galleries. A few shops dot the street but don’t overwhelm it. Having recently spent time in other nearby coastal cities, Ojai is a departure. And just beyond town, the valley floor is dotted with citrus groves, vineyards, olive orchards, and horse ranches, all part of the area’s earthy, agrarian charm.

A touch of history

Ojai was originally inhabited by the Chumash, a native American people, indigenous to the coastal regions of Southern California and the northern Channel Islands. The Chumash lived in the region for thousands of years and considered the valley a place of deep spiritual significance. Spanish settlers arrived in the late 18th Century, and the valley was eventually named Ojai, a Chumash word believed to mean “nest” or “moon.”

In 1874, Royce G. Surdam, a businessman from the East Coast, formally laid out the town, and renamed it Nordhoff, after Charles Nordhoff, a writer who praised California living. In 1917, the name was officially reverted to Ojai, in honor of its Chumash roots.

Ojai’s reputation as a wellness destination took root in the early 20th century. It’s clean mountain air and natural beauty attracted health seekers, artists, and spiritual communities. Today, Ojai still carries that legacy. It’s known for yoga retreats, meditation centers, organic farming, art, film and music festivals, and a strong sense of community spirit.

Ojai’s vibe

Ojai’s vibe can best be described as bohemian elegance. It’s a place where artists mingle with vintners, where farm-to-table restaurants thrive beside metaphysical bookstores, and where wellness seekers practice yoga at sunrise before strolling to wine tastings in the afternoon. There’s an intentionality here, about everything from food, to living, and the environment. This may be what gives Ojai its grounded yet elevated feel.

Another highpoint for us was a sunset visit to Meditation Mount, whose missions is to promote the building of an enlightened and compassionate world through the power of Creative Meditation. After taking part in a community meditation in the Center, we walked the winding road around the grounds and stopped to take in the sweeping views of the valley and sunset. A highpoint here was pausing at the Heart and Chakra Totems, listening for the audible vibration coming from the buried crystal bowls and quartz crystal beneath the Totem.
